One of our most challenging projects to date was a 3d modeling and surgical animation for the Smith & Nephew “Legion” knee system. Referencing hand written notes gathered in multiple interviews with physicians and product experts at Smith & Nephew, each surgical step and technique was painstakingly recreated and animated in 3DS Max for use as an instructional guide for physicians, as well as for promo materials at the time of product launch.

Working with the original CAD files of many of the various knee components, and having to create and/or recreate many others, we brought in the whole surgical kit piece by piece for modeling, texturing and lighting. Once the digital “set” was created within 3DS Max (complete with roving cameras and bone models), the 20 plus surgical animations were then executed step by step, each one clocking in at 4 to 7 minutes.
